Colon Cancer

Signature Health Services can help with the care and management of colon cancer.

Colon Cancer

The colon is the final path of the digestive tract. When a group of cells in the colon grow out of control, it is called colon cancer. These cells form polyps, which are the beginning of a tumor. Once cancerous cells appear in the colon, they can spread to other body parts.

Although this disease typically affects older adults, patients of any age can develop cancer in the colon. Generally, it begins as a small clump of cells inside the colon. These clumps or polyps hardly produce symptoms at the early stages. However, cancer can spread to the rectum; that’s why sometimes it is called colorectal cancer.

When symptoms appear, they will vary depending on the patient’s overall health condition. Nevertheless, some of the most common signs are:

  • Blood in stool
  • Diarrhea, constipation, or other changes in bowel habits
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Unexplained weight loss

Depending on the cancer stage, location, and other health concerns, the doctor will recommend which treatments will most likely help each patient. For example, colon cancer treatment usually involves surgically removing part of the colon. Other alternatives like chemotherapy or radiation therapy are also commonly recommended.

Like most types of cancer, the cause of colon cancer remains unknown. Although we are currently unable to predict or prevent colon cancer, there are some actions we can take to reduce certain risk factors:

  • Keep a healthy body weight

  • Avoid tobacco products

  • Eat a healthy diet

  • Learn your family medical history

  • Follow your doctor’s recommendations regarding colon cancer screenings

A colon cancer patient must stay hydrated and eat meals high in vitamins and proteins. Besides regular daily care, patients have to deal with the expected side effects of treatment.

A registered nurse might help a colon cancer patient keep track of their prescribed medications or therapies, support some activities of daily living, and manage symptoms and side effects, among other tasks.

Professional involvement in a medical treatment cost depends on your health requirements and medical insurance. So please, feel free to call us about any inquiry or information regarding the home care of a patient with colon cancer.

At Signature, we have the experience and resources to provide the best support for the patient and the family. Also, our registered nurses may help with assistance and could support any treatment process.
