Cancer Care

Signature Health Services can help with the management and treatment of Cancer.

Cancer and how we care for it

Cancer is a disease that develops in our bodies’ cells. We have trillions of cells in our body that, like us, grow, and multiply to form new cells. They grow old or get damaged and die.

Cancer occurs when this process is broken, and abnormal and damaged cells multiply when they shouldn’t. These damaged cells are responsible for tumors and lumps. They can occur in any part of the body and almost everyone.

As stated above, the process of damaged cells multiplying itself causes the disease. But what causes it? Genetics, environment, and characteristics of an individual can increase the development of cancer. At the same time, it is well known that some addictions could provoke the production of damaged cells. Even though cancer is a genetic disease, there are external factors that help to develop the disease. Tobacco, a poor diet, and ingesting chemicals (like drugs) are the number one factor in potentially developing cancer. These people are more prone to the disease than others.

Yet some people get cancer and have never smoked a cigarette in their lives. The reason is that the core of cancer relies on the changes in the DNA and the overproduction of damaged cells that multiply uncontrollably – which leads to tumors.

There are about 100 different types of cancer, the most common ones include

  • Lung Cancer
  • Breast Cancer
  • Brain Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Bladder Cancer
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
  • Kidney Cancer
  • Renal Cancer
Certain types of cancer have no symptoms at all. The most common cancer symptoms are tenderness and swelling on the affected area, a mole with a strange shape or color, and fatigue without cause. Other types of cancer are easier to detect, like breast cancer and brain cancer. Breast cancer can be spotted with regular exams, and brain cancer comes with severe headaches.

Unfortunately, there are no real symptoms to determine by yourself. That is why the American Cancer Society recommends regular cancer-related checkups, especially for people over 50 who haven’t had a healthy lifestyle.

While there is no proven cure for cancer, chemotherapy is the most common and effective treatment for cancer. However, it doesn’t assure complete recovery. Depending on the type of cancer and the stage of the illness, it can be cured. In some other cases, not even chemotherapy is enough.
