Fall Risk Assessment

Signature Health Services can help with assessing your fall risk.

Fall Risk Assessment

Falls are the top cause of injury in older adults, but healthcare patients are more prone to falls because of limited mobility, surgery recovery, or general weakness due to illness. It is a common assumption that falls are a regular or inevitable part of aging, but it is not necessarily true.

In many cases, falls are preventable from happening. Healthcare providers and caregivers utilize a fall risk assessment to identify and address risk factors and understand how likely a patient will fall.

Falls usually come without warning; therefore, a fall risk assessment will find if a patient has a low, moderate, or increased risk of falling. The evaluation considers the patient’s condition and symptoms like dizziness, light-headedness, or rapid or irregular heartbeats.

  • Reduce risks of falling or self-harming
  • Maximize the patient’s ability to move safely
  • Keep an independent, healthy life

Most falls, if a patient is in a delicate condition, cause at least some injury. These may range from bruising to fractures, head injuries, and even death. Constantly falling also leads to the patient losing confidence, feeling withdrawn, and being afraid of moving around.

To run an efficient fall risk assessment, our staff can make an initial screening that includes questions about the patient’s overall health, history of falling, balance, standing, or walking problems. Then nurses or therapists can perform a set of tasks to test the patient’s strength, balance, and gait.

If the assessment shows an increased risk, we can work out some strategies to prevent falls, reduce the chance of injuries, and make recommendations about room requirements or other prevention-related issues.

There is a simple and quick method to assess a patient’s risk of falling called the Morse Fall Scale, which considers the following:

  • History of falling
  • Diagnosis
  • Ambulatory aids (crutches, cane, wheelchair)
  • IV therapy (if applicable)
  • Gait
  • Mental status

Professional involvement in a fall risk assessment cost depends on your health requirements and medical insurance particularities. So please, feel free to call us about any inquiry for information regarding home care or fall prevention.

A licensed specialist should conduct every test and assessment. Besides, patients with increased risk factors could have some fears and restraints due to their overall health condition.

At Signature, we have the experience and resources to provide the best support for the patient and the family. Also, our registered nurses and licensed therapists may help with assistance and could support any treatment process.
